A man with the Vueltiao hat

Atanquez, Sierra Nevada, Colombia – 3 June 2010

A Colombian peasant wears the traditional vueltiao hat in the mountains of Sierra Nevada. The sombrero vueltiao is one of the symbols of Colombia. It is made out of a type of cane (caña flecha) that grows in the northern Caribbean region. The roots of making the hat can be found amongst the Indian tribes. Although it has been traditionally worn by villagers, it is also popular in the music scene of cumbia and vallenato.

I really liked the photo. It reminded me of Guerrillero Heroico, the iconic photo of Marxist revolutionary Che Guevara taken by Alberto Korda. It became so popular that it was called the worlds’ most famous photo. Anyway I would like to congratulate Jan Sochor for the outstanding photography. He has managed to capture the spirit of the average Columbian who has made it a point to always smile and live a happy life in spite of living in a country ravaged by bloodshed.
