Holy Week in Mompox, Colombia
Santa Cruz de Mompox, Colombia – March 2024
The celebration of Holy Week in Santa Cruz de Mompox, a small colonial town on the Magdalena river near the Caribbean coast in Colombia, combines Catholic religious rituals with syncretic and pagan traditions that have been preserved in the region for centuries. While in the evenings the inhabitants of Mompox visit the cemetery to light candles, bring offerings, and commemorate their relatives, at night they walk the narrow streets in slow processions, illuminated only by lanterns and hundreds of candles – often in silence – to demonstrate their devotion and spirituality, making Mompox a town where reality meets magic.
