Léogane, Haiti – 21 July 2008

Leprosy is an infectious disease that has been known since at least 600 BC. Although the effective treatment for leprosy appeared already in the 1940s the disease has not been totally eradicated yet. The treatment is quite expensive and therefore was not widely adopted in most leprosy endemic countries. There are two to three million people worldwide who are permanently disabled because of leprosy. The World Leprosy Day is held on Sunday January 25, 2009.

The picture was really touchy. It brought tears to my eyes. Two days back I was really dejected because I lost my job. In fact I was blaming God for that. But this picture made me realize how lucky I am. At least my hands and feet are intact. I have got good health. This means that I will be able to earn a living by indulging in physical labor. But that is not the case with the poor man in the picture. He is dependent on the hospital staff for the remainder of his life even to have food. I feel really sorry for him.

This is the kind of photography we need more. And make it seen. Bring awareness to other people's problems. A picture tells more than a 1000 words, and images like this prove it.PS: I don't think I mentioned it before, but I love your work !!!!
