Nukak Maku
San Jose del Guaviare, Colombia – 2009
Nukak Maku people are a nomadic indigenous tribe from Amazonia, uncontacted until 1988, who were violently forced out of their original jungle territory in the south of Colombia. Nukak Maku got stuck between two worlds – they can not go back to the jungle but in the same time they are far from being assimilated. An entire photo essay will come up shortly.
This is a stunning photo. A snapshot of their culture, which has been decimated by disease and war, infighting and capitalism. A truly timeless set of photographs that hopefully will generate some awareness.

I am feeling sorry for the Nukak Maku tribe. They cannot go back to their traditional homes because forests are cut down at an alarming pace. Same is the plight of aborigines throughout the world. Developed countries like Australia and New Zealand are also doing the same thing. I am reminded of a famous saying by Gandhiji “Earth provides enough to satisfy every man's need, but not every man's greed”. Anyway this picture and the accompanying note reminded me a lot of things. I found this blog thought provoking.
