Guambiano Indians

Silvia, Colombia – 8 April 2004

The Guambiano, a South American Indian tribe, live in the southwestern corner of Colombia. There are about 20.000 of Guambianos living in communities close to their capital town of Silvia. Guambianos are traditionally agricultural people. Since the Spanish conquest they have been gradually evicted from their original fertile lands up to the cold, rainy mountains. In spite of the permanent pressure by Colombian society, the Guambiano Indians still speak their original language, keep their colorful clothes and maintain their nature based religious customs.
